Children’s

Asbury Kids

Asbury is a family-centered church, and being part of God’s church family is the best way we know to raise your child as a Christian in today’s world. Asbury works to include the family in their child’s spiritual education. Teaching the children to follow Jesus’ example, we encourage parents and other family members to model the same example of prayer and service. When children see loved and respected adults model a Christian life, they not only learn to follow God, but they gain the necessary tools to become a Christian leader.

From birth through 5th grade, children are loved and valued in Asbury’s Children’s Ministry! Our Sunday morning educational programs are built around our mission and core values to provide an age-appropriate Christian Education. Programs are rich with exciting hands-on learning, focused on the multiple intelligences and whole child development. Here you will find the various activities we provide for your children to learn and grow in the love for God.

Sunday School Class 3rd Grade – Learning About My Bible

Third grade is a very special year at Asbury UMC! Rising 3rd grade students are gifted with a new Bible and invited to participate in the “Learning About My Bible” class. The children will learn to find any Book in the Old or New Testaments using the Table of Contents, find any chapter in any book and any verse in any chapter, find parts of verses when the Bible reference uses the letters a, b and c with a verse number, tell the difference between books with similar names such as 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel and John and 1 John, and recognize the additional helps in a Bible and be able to use them. It is the perfect age and opportunity to make the Bible one of the most important learning tools for any young disciple!

Curriculum

The curriculum used at Asbury is designed and selected by the Director of Children’s Ministries. Resources used support United Methodist theology and doctrine and contain basic elements common to all Christians.
Snacks are sometimes served during children’s programming. If your child has food allergies, please make sure you notify your child’s leader.

Safe Gatherings Campus

The safety and security of your child is a high priority at Asbury. The church has policies and procedures that define guidelines, applications, screening, and appropriate hiring and training of staff and volunteers, procedures for drop off and release of children, and appropriate child-to-staff ratio requirements. Any questions may be directed to our Director of Children’s Ministries. Click here to send an email for more information.

Asbury Kids in Worship

At Asbury UMC, we believe children enjoy being a part of the worship experience! Your child may desire to lead a prayer, read the weekly scripture, and participate as an acolyte and bring the light of Christ in at the beginning of worship! We offer a children’s moment during each worship service, and kids are invited to continue worshiping with their families or head to Kids Club and enjoy various activities during the remainder of the service in our Kids Club space.

Acolyte Ministry

Children, 3rd grade and up, are invited to serve as Acolytes in worship. Training is offered annually or on an individual basis by arrangement. The children are taught how to serve and assist pastors in the worship service, lighting altar candles, and assisting in other religious ceremonies.

JAM Kids– Jesus and Music

Throughout the year, our volunteers will lead our children in learning about Jesus and God’s love through songs of praise! Our Jesus and Music rehearsals are part of our Sunday School hour. JAM Kids will on occasion share what they have learned in song and praise and will be a part of our worship services! Learning the Bible through music is one of the most important gifts we can give our children– songs that will be written on their hearts for a lifetime!

Scouts

Asbury United Methodist Church is host to the oldest, continuous Scout troop west of the Mississippi River. Founded in 1923, Troop 24 has been an integral part of the ministry here at Asbury. Moreover, Scouting in general plays an important role in the community. Whether as a cub scout or boy scout, boys learn the importance of integrity and value of leadership. Through the program, our hope is to build “a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.”

Cub Scouts: Tuesdays, 7:00 pm
Cub Scouts meets weekly for boys ages 6 – 10 (GRADES 1-5). Cub Scouts experience fun, wear cool uniforms, take
great field trips, play games, build things, learn about animals, all while developing a love for God and their country. They can do weekend family camping and attend day camp in June.

Boy Scouts: Tuesdays, 7:00 pm
Boy Scouts meet weekly at Asbury. Beginning at age 11 or finishing the 5th grade, boys can be very active in service to others and outdoor fun and adventures and can attend summer camp. The program instills God-based values, ethical character, citizenship, and leadership development.

Girl Scouts: Second Tuesday, 6:30-8 pm
Asbury United Methodist Church is host to Girl Scout Troop #6349, started in 2014. The Girl Scout Mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. With this program, girls will discover fun, friendship, enriching experiences, and participate in community stewardship.

Currently, Asbury is home to Daisy, Brownie and Junior Scouts, building moral character and confidence in local kindergarten through fifth grade girls. Girl scout activities include playing games, field trips, learning about science and world cultures, day camp, and overnight camping.
